Reaching the Summit

August 26, 2025 - Before I share the end of the story, I want to let you know that over the next several days, I will be posting numerous Bonus videos from my hike that didn't make it into the newsletters. Click below to see more lessons from the Timpanogos Cave Trail.

Let's get back to the hike.

After pressing forward, in spite of fatigue, sore feet, and thousands of steps (11,198 to be exact!) I made it to the top, toured the cave, and hiked back down. It was indeed a hike, with many rest stops along the way. But well worth the effort.

As I found the various signs along the way, I was constantly reminded that my small adventure was a metaphor for life. Every endeavor we experience will have similar steps, challenges, and lessons along the way. How, then, can we apply these lessons in other experiences throughout life?

  1. Be alert of everything around you. Not just to be safe, although that is part of it, but to see the seemingly small, yet important, lessons in the everyday experiences.
  2. Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Among the people who passed me on the way up were men and women in the 80s, and even a mom with an infant and small children!
  3. Just because you "summit" doesn't mean you have to go beyond that the next time around. When I returned to the trail the week after I had achieved my goal, I only went 3/4 of the way up. And I was totally okay with that.
  4. Recognize that the rewards for achieving a goal are multi-faceted. For me this included better health, a desire to be out in nature more, and making new friends along the way.
  5. Let one such achievement motivate you to try another experiences. Always wanted to watercolor or audition for your local theater group? Go for it! Confidence learned in one area can easily transfer to another.

So until next time, always keep your eye on the One that loves you most. Ciao!

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 1, No. 18 Radioactive Reunions October 28, 2025 - With Halloween just around the corner, we've arrived at the end of our taphophile travels. And you'll be glad to know that I saved the best - or rather - the creepiest, cemetery story for the last. In its simplest definition, radioactive refers to something that emits, or is capable of emitting, energy. In my visit to the Pleasant Green Cemetery in Magna, Utah, I learned a thing or two about radioactivity,...

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 1, No. 17 Swallowed Up October 21, 2025 - What do you think of when you see the phrase "swallowed up"? My mind tends to go to the Bible story of Jonah and the three days he spent in the belly of whale. But that's probably not going to be a reality for any of us. What then could it mean for you and me in our daily lives? Being "swallowed up" in this sense more than likely refers to being overwhelmed by responsibilities, tasks, unresolved conflict, or uncertainty....

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 1, No. 16 A Chair of Charity October 14, 2025 - As followers of Jesus Christ, we are to "mourn with those who mourn and comfort those who stand in need of comfort." While this may feel like a simple instruction, some times we just don't know what to say. Here are a few thoughts that might help. While you may feel uncomfortable approaching someone in mourning, the worst thing to do is to do nothing. See past your discomfort to reach out to comfort them. If...
