Mentoring Others

May 5, 2026 - I feel, in a way, that I grew up with Robert Redford. From "Jeremiah Johnson" to "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" to "The Sting," his movies seemed to be everywhere. And I loved them all.

Yet for all his Hollywood fame, when he died at the age of 89 last fall, perhaps what Redford is remembered for the most is his mentoring of Indie filmmakers and students.

To mentor someone is to provide guidance and encouragement; to use one's gifts and talents to inspire and help others. Redford, by all accounts, created goodness by mentoring others. You can do the same.

1. Consider what gifts you have that could be shared with others.
2. Look for opportunities to guide those wanting to pursue what you have already achieved. Are you an accomplished teacher? Who can you inspire to fulfill this dream?
3. Think of people who were mentors to you. What did they do that you appreciate to this day?
4. While "actions speak louder than words," words still matter. What words can you offer someone who may be struggling?
5. Just because you may be grown and established in your life, what dreams do you still have? Who could help you to pursue some of these goals?

You don't have to be a famous movie star to mentor those around you. Nor does it occur only within a business or professional setting. You can be a mentor to anyone with your own sphere of influence, not matter how big or small.
