Step Forward with Confidence

July 8, 2025 - Any goal requires a first step. And sometimes, that step can be the most difficult of all.

Here are a few ideas to help make that initial effort a little less painful.

  1. Don't look too far down the road. If I focus too much on the rest of the journey, I will certainly get overwhelmed.
  2. Realize that everyone's first step will look different. I don't have to do this in the same way or at the same rate as anyone else.
  3. Approach that first step with curiosity, not fear; learn to develop a healthy sense of anticipation. Instead of thinking what might go wrong, I need to think about what might go right.
  4. Let go of expectations. Will my whole journey toward my goal look exactly as I planned it? Probably not. But that doesn't mean I'm on the wrong path.
  5. Lastly, I can enjoy the journey and look forward to all I will learn along the way.

My hike to Timpanogos Cave is sure to be a wonderful adventure. I hope your journey to your goals is the same.

Rushmore who upon visiting the area in the mid-1880s asked the name of the granite peak he saw. The man he asked didn’t know, but then replied they would name it after him. And they did. While the name Rushmore is just that, a name, too often I feel that 21st-century life expects us to “rush more“ in order to accomplish as...
