Walk Through Time

July 15, 2025 - Before the images of four US presidents were carved into it, Mount Rushmore was named after Charles E. Rushmore who upon visiting the area in the mid-1880s asked the name of the granite peak he saw. The man he asked didn’t know, but then replied they would name it after him. And they did.

While the name Rushmore is just that, a name, too often I feel that 21st-century life expects us to “rush more“ in order to accomplish as much as we can in as little time as possible.

So this week, let’s slow down. The geologic layers that comprise Mount Timpanogos took eons to form. We don’t need to be in a hurry either.

  1. Take time to plan ahead. Life is busy so make sure that the things that matter most are at the top of your to-do list.
  2. Take time to be flexible. That being said, it’s equally important to change when things don’t go as planned. Don’t be so rigid that you can’t make course corrections when needed.
  3. Take time to serve others. Any journey includes crossing paths with fellow travelers. Being aware of their needs as we travel our individual trails will make it more enjoyable.
  4. Take time to rest and relax. Just as I needed to take breaks while climbing the Timpanogos Cave trail, we need to schedule time to do nothing on occasion. Maybe sitting outside, soaking up the sun, and listening to the birds is exactly what you need right now.
  5. And lastly, take time to remember. Your memories (both good and bad) will be woven into the tapestry of your life’s fabric. Reliving the good memories can be just as joyful as experiencing them the first time around.

Life is a journey with twists and turns and uphill climbs. So enjoy it without rushing or having to see and do it all at once.
