Swallowed Up

October 21, 2025 - What do you think of when you see the phrase "swallowed up"? My mind tends to go to the Bible story of Jonah and the three days he spent in the belly of whale.

But that's probably not going to be a reality for any of us. What then could it mean for you and me in our daily lives?

Being "swallowed up" in this sense more than likely refers to being overwhelmed by responsibilities, tasks, unresolved conflict, or uncertainty. While not the same as finding ourselves inside a giant fish, the anxious feelings can be similar.

So, if you are feeling swallowed up by life, here are a few suggestions for getting yourself back onto dry land.

  1. Many circumstances are temporary and will naturally resolve themselves over a short period of time. Let go of frustration over these situations.
  2. Try to channel your energy into what you do have control over. Like I used to tell my kids, "Don't focus on what you can't do; focus on what you can do."
  3. Indulge in something you enjoy that has nothing to do with the challenges you are facing. It need not be expensive or time-consuming.
  4. Get out in nature - take deep breaths, feeling the grass between your toes; soak up some sun.
  5. And lastly, for more serious, longer-lasting situations, consider seeking professional or ecclesiastical help to meet those challenges. You don't have to do this alone.

Feeling swallowed up is never comfortable. But it doesn't have to be debilitating. Find a way to crawl out of the belly of that metaphorical whale to the light and air above you.

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 1, No. 18 Radioactive Reunions October 28, 2025 - With Halloween just around the corner, we've arrived at the end of our taphophile travels. And you'll be glad to know that I saved the best - or rather - the creepiest, cemetery story for the last. In its simplest definition, radioactive refers to something that emits, or is capable of emitting, energy. In my visit to the Pleasant Green Cemetery in Magna, Utah, I learned a thing or two about radioactivity,...

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 1, No. 16 A Chair of Charity October 14, 2025 - As followers of Jesus Christ, we are to "mourn with those who mourn and comfort those who stand in need of comfort." While this may feel like a simple instruction, some times we just don't know what to say. Here are a few thoughts that might help. While you may feel uncomfortable approaching someone in mourning, the worst thing to do is to do nothing. See past your discomfort to reach out to comfort them. If...

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 1, No.5 1 Talking Trees October 7, 2025 - Have you ever heard of the "Wood Wide Web"? No, that's not a typo. This phrase refers to an underground root system that allows trees to share resources and communicate with each other. They should have added another "w" word - "Wow!" - in that reference because that's exactly what I thought when I first heard of this concept. If trees can share resources and communicate either above ground (as this week's video...
