Tell Me a Story

February 10, 2026 - There's nothing better than a story to settle down a child at night. But what about adults? Can stories do the same for us?
We can't talk about family history without also talking about stories. There is power in storytelling, especiall in true narratives: Stories connect us with other people, allowing us to feel more deeply their experiences; stories tie principles to real-life situations; and stories are remembered long after a lesson is lost.

Connecting with our ancestors through the stories of their lives will bring about all these blessings and so much more.

But where can you find their stories? Consider the following ideas to help you walk in the footsteps of your ancestors through stories from their lives.

  1. Sign into FamilySearch.org and click on one of your grand/great grandparents. Then go to Memories. Read through any stories uploaded there.
  2. If you can't find anything in Memories, why not try your own hand at writing about their lives? Which ancestor do you remember the most? Write down your own memories and add them to FamilySearch for other relatives to read and enjoy.
  3. If you are fortunate to still have living parents or grandparents, you can add them as "Living" in FamilySearch. Download the Family Tree app, then go to the Memories section of their profile. Click on the "+" button where you can record them talking about a memory. Capture them retelling a memory from their own life.
  4. Stories can also be told through photographs, artwork, and music. Use your talents to retell events from the lives of your ancestors using one of these mediums.
  5. Lastly, don't forget that you have (or may one day have) descendants of your own. How can you record events and stories from your life now to share with them when you are gone?

Let the power of storytelling increase your love and appreciation for those who have passed on. And who knows? You may even sleep better at night.

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 7 Connect with Cousins February 17, 2026 - I met a woman recently who, through some modern-era polygamists in her extended family, had over 500 first cousins! That made my mere 30 pale in comparison. But then I remembered that when I opted-in to be a part of Relatives at RootsTech last year, I had over 50,000 cousins! To be fair, these weren't first cousins, but it allowed me to connect with distant cousins who could help me on my trip to Scotland a year...
