Falling in Love with Learning

September 15, 2026 - Nothing says fall more than back to school. I know I'm going to date myself here, but sharpened No. 2 pencils, the smell of textbooks, Pee-Chee folders, and the latest fashion brings on an excitement I can't explain. Which is odd, because I graduated from high school nearly 50 years ago! Later as an adult, I taught junior high French and felt that same enthusiasm.

I realize now that the whatever I was feeling, whether as a student or a teacher, had nothing to do with stuff. It was the anticipation of learning that stirred my soul.

I believe that when we stop learning, we actually stop living. That's what life is all about - expanding our knowledge from the cradle to the grave.

Wherever you are in life or your own schooling, here are a few ideas to fall in love with learning all over again.

1. Create a bucket list of activities you've always wanted to try. Choose one and make it happen!
2. Check out your local library - especially if it's been a long time since you were there - and find a book on a subject you know nothing about.
3. Beside your city's bricks and mortar library, find a "Free Little Library" in your neighborhood and see if anything catches your eye. https://littlefreelibrary.org/map/​

5. Here in Utah, state colleges allow seniors to audit many classes. This just might be your chance to dive into some learning you've always wanted to explore.
