Serving With Pleasure

August 25, 2026 - Do you ever feel like you're just going through the motions when asked to serve someone else? Maybe you signed up for a community project, or were asked to help a neighbor in need and then regretted the time and energy it would require.

If you have ever felt this way, don't beat yourself up. All of us have moments when we are less compassionate than we should be.

Serving with joy in our hearts for what we can bring to others is an art, not a science. And for many of us, it is something that requires practice, patience, and perseverance.

Here are a few ideas for developing these three P's.

  1. Be confident in what you have to have to offer others. Your gifts and talents are needed in the world.
  2. While you may not be able to make everyone happy, you can do your best to be cheerful and optimistic. What people do with your offering is not your problem.
  3. Look for ways to be cheerful in stressful situations. Long lines at the grocery store? The clerk is probably more stressed than you. See if you can get him or her to smile.
  4. Don't give up just because you feel like your efforts aren't making a difference. Keep trying.
  5. Look outward more often than inward.

Life is full of challenges. As we each do our part to serve others with cheerfulness, the world will be a better place.

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 37 Falling in Love with Learning September 15, 2026 - Nothing says fall more than back to school. I know I'm going to date myself here, but sharpened No. 2 pencils, the smell of textbooks, Pee-Chee folders, and the latest fashion brings on an excitement I can't explain. Which is odd, because I graduated from high school nearly 50 years ago! Later as an adult, I taught junior high French and felt that same enthusiasm. I realize now that the whatever I was...

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 36 Falling in Love with Fall September 8, 2026 - Welcome to my new series, "Falling in Love with Fall." There is something about this season which stirs my soul. For me, autumn is that comfortable place between hot summers and chilly winters. I love the idea of grabbing a sweater and hot drink, and settling in for an early Christmas video. The idea of nesting, creating a space of coziness is more than just a good idea, it's a great one! But what about...

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 35 Reflecting God's Light September 1, 2026 - Seeing myself in a mirror is not always a pleasant experience. I see my wrinkles, my rolls, my grey hair and wonder where my divine nature as a daughter of God went. Then I remember that more than my physical appearance, is the importance of my spiritual appearance - one that with His help, I can reflect to bless the lives of others. It's not always easy, but here are a few thoughts of how we can reflect God's...
