In Plain Sight

June 23, 2026 - The phrase "hidden in plain sight" is attributed to Edgar Allan Poe's 1844 story, "The Purloined Letter" where a detective finds a stolen letter, a crucial piece of evidence, in "plain sight" on the mantle above the fireplace. The idiom now refers to something is overlooked because it is right there where everyone can see it, a "paradox of perception, where something is both visible and invisible at the same time."

That's a long explanation for the title of this newsletter. But it goes along perfectly with the lesson I learned and want to share.

Sometimes we look at people and think we know what is going on. After all, it might be a friend we've known for years.

Yet on other occasions we might miss what is painfully obvious to others because we think we know a person, a situation, or a problem.

At Moon's Rare Books is located in Provo, Utah, as you'll discover in this week's video, things are not always as they seem. Consider these thoughts this week:

1. What is "hiding in plain sight" in your life or in the lives of others?
2. How can you become more aware of what is really going on around you?
3. In our social-media saturated world, truth can be twisted to suit one's needs or desires. How can you discern between truth and error?
4. Why do you sometimes hold on to ideas that you know are not true?
5. Always remember that how a bookstore is presented is not nearly as important as how we present ourselves or perceive others.

One last thought: You are a beloved son or daughter of God - even if the world tells you otherwise. If you feel you are "hiding in plain sight" trying to be something you're not, put your trust in Him and hold on to the truth of your divine identity.
