Smell the Roses

June 9, 2026 - Have you noticed that roses don't seem to smell as strong as they used to? If so, you're not alone. In order to create flowers with longer vase-life and are resistant to pests, something had to be sacrificed. It was a trade-off: you get to enjoy them longer, but they're not going to smell as good.

What do you think about this? Do you agree with these decisions? What would you rather have: roses that last longer with more vibrant colors, or ones whose scent can be smelled from across the room? Don't worry, there are no wrong answers.

But it does make you stop and think. First, the suggestion to "stop and smell the roses" takes on new meaning - if you find roses that haven't been overbred, take advantage of the opportunity to smell them.

But beyond that, consider what trade-offs or sacrifices you have made.

  1. We all have to make choices - we can't have everything we want. What have you given up in order to have other things?
  2. How do you choose what to hold onto and what to give up?
  3. Making these choices is deeply personal and not everyone will agree with what you decide to do. How can you ignore others' opinions knowing you are doing what is best for you.
  4. Taking time to "stop and smell the roses" is all about enjoying our surroundings which will help lower stress levels and enhance emotional well-being. Who wouldn't want more of that?
  5. While literal roses don't smell as sweet as they used to, what could this metaphor mean to you?

So, get out there and look for roses, whether real or symbolic, and breath in deeply the scent they were meant to share.

Today we're going to mix things up a bit. How about getting out there by walking around your own neighborhood? You might think, "How boring is that?" Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 21 "Curiouser and Curiouser" May 26, 2026 - It took me a quarter of a century to be curious enough to visit the Gilgal Gardens in Salt Lake City. Now I'm spreading the word. Thomas Child knew his garden would not be for everyone. And he was okay with that. “You don’t have to agree with me,” he once explained. “You may think I am a nut, but I hope I have aroused your thinking and curiosity.” As far as I'm concerned, he has accomplished his goal. What keeps...
