Walk Around the Block

June 2, 2026 - Over the past several weeks, we've talked about getting out there to explore new places, to have new experiences, and see things you've never seen before.

Today we're going to mix things up a bit. How about getting out there by walking around your own neighborhood? You might think, "How boring is that?" But if you put on your shoes, head out the door, and try to see things with a fresh view, you'll be amazed by what you encounter.

To paraphrase Marcel Proust, who addressed this very issue, let's pick apart his idea: "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes."

  1. Why would we ever settle for artificial journeys when we can experience real ones?
  2. Are your voyages ones of discovery? What can you do to make the most of any trip or adventure you take?
  3. Why do we tend to seek our new landscapes rather than revisiting the familiar ones?
  4. What does it mean to look at something with "new eyes?"
  5. The next time you get out there to walk around your neighborhood, how can you view things in a new way?

There's certainly nothing wrong with trying new things. But think of what you can learn by looking at familiar experiences and surroundings with a fresh view. A walk around the block will never be the same again.

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 23 Smell the Roses June 9, 2026 - Have you noticed that roses don't seem to smell as strong as they used to? If so, you're not alone. In order to create flowers with longer vase-life and are resistant to pests, something had to be sacrificed. It was a trade-off: you get to enjoy them longer, but they're not going to smell as good. What do you think about this? Do you agree with these decisions? What would you rather have: roses that last longer with more...

Iron Rod Press Newsletter Vol. 2, No. 21 "Curiouser and Curiouser" May 26, 2026 - It took me a quarter of a century to be curious enough to visit the Gilgal Gardens in Salt Lake City. Now I'm spreading the word. Thomas Child knew his garden would not be for everyone. And he was okay with that. “You don’t have to agree with me,” he once explained. “You may think I am a nut, but I hope I have aroused your thinking and curiosity.” As far as I'm concerned, he has accomplished his goal. What keeps...
